What is the difference between compounded semaglutide and Wegovy®?

Wegovy® is FDA approved for weight loss and is produced by Novo Nordisk. Its active ingredient is semaglutide. Compounded semaglutide also has semaglutide as the active ingredient but is manufactured by state-licensed compounding pharmacies that meet federal and state requirements, including quality standards. When compounding in compliance with federal and state law, compounded drugs are not subject to FDA approval and are not evaluated for safety or efficacy.

Compounded semaglutide is being offered by AlanMeds because Wegovy® is on the FDA drug shortage list, meaning Novo Nordisk is not able to produce enough to satisfy demand.
